Arabians take to the court with scrimmages

“We came out with a lot of intensity and excitement on Friday, ” said Coach Leigh Anne McIver, Devine Head Varsity Volleyball Coach. “I was really happy with the way we performed in the scrimmages this weekend. We played some great defense and was really good on serve receive. Also offensively we looked really smooth. Saturday was not as smooth as Friday but the girls still played well. We were able to play against some faster offensive teams which allowed us to really focus on our blocking game and forced us to be more aggressive on defense. Overall I am really happy where we are at this point in the season and can’t wait to see them on the court in Pleasanton.”
All three Devine teams played a dual against Pleasanton and Jourdanton on Tuesday, August 8 on press night.
This weekend the Varsity will compete in the Columbus Volleyball Classic on August 10-12.
The Freshmen and Junior Varsity volleyball teams will host their annual Devine Tournament this Saturday, August 12 here in Devine.
Next week all three teams will travel to Uvalde for games at 5 and 6 on August 15.
Junior Varsity
Coach Mark Mangold had this to say after the scrimmages, “The MV scrimmages were a great start to our season again. We get a chance to look at the teams and start coaching and teaching. We got better in every match and what a difference it made on Saturday in Harlandale. The girls were excited and they very well should be. I’m amazed with the adjustments they made and how much importance they put into playing well.”

Freshmen
The freshman started the season on fire in the scrimmages this weekend. “We were anxious and unsure during our first scrimmage, but quickly adapted and started playing well. Friday, the girls were learning about positions and transitioning, but by Saturday they were playing some great defense and offense. Saturday, we also played against some tougher teams so they were able to work on being more aggressive on the court. I am excited about my first season and can’t wait to see where this season will lead, ” said Coach Kim Lane.
