The Varsity Arabians took an early lead and put Crystal City away late in a 4-0 win last Friday, March 24.
Devine first struck in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Brittany Jay singled, Amanda Wilson moved her into scoring position, and Jessi Ramirez blasted a triple to right field to knock in Jay for a 1-0 lead.
Despite a number of hard hits and near-hits over the following innings, the Lady Javelina defense held strong. Meanwhile, Arabian pitcher Wilson tossed a gem, allowing only two Crystal City base runners the entire game.
The Arabians broke through for insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. Jenna Sadler and Jay both ripped singles past shortstop, and Wilson had a base hit of her own to move the runners. Brooklyn Anderson reached first base on a fielder’s choice to load the bases with two outs before being replaced on the base paths with courtesy runner Makayla Waddey. Ramirez came through again, lancing a line drive to right center to drive in Sadler, Jay, and Waddey and secure the 4-0 win.
Wilson went the distance on the mound, giving up just two hits and recording 13 strikeouts.
“We’re used to double digit hit games, so tonight it may look like our offense wasn’t on track, but that wasn’t the case at all,” Head Coach Mark Mangold said. “Sometimes you can have a great plate appearance with no reward.”
The Arabians improved to 3-0 in District 29-4A play and 17-5 overall.
Devine next takes on the Lady Mavericks in Pearsall on Friday, March 31.
